One expects a city to be noisy, but the roar of hundreds of small motorcycles as the traffic light changes is nothing I have experienced in Washington, D.C. But these motorcycles are the only way to get anywhere on time. One sits in one’s car going nowhere as the motorcycles utilize the “cycle” lanes between the stalled cars. At first I resisted riding the motorcycle taxi service which consists of hordes of teenagers and their metal steeds, which one flags down, hops on and then prays for deliverance in one piece at one’s destination. Speaking of steeds, I occasionally see an elephant being led down the street, leathery sides painted with good luck signs, or perhaps advertising. What do I know, as the written language bears no resemblance to Roman script.

The smell of Bangkok is a mixture of exhaust, stopped up sewers (which sometimes I see being cleaned by grinning Thais up to their thighs in black glop), and the unique cuisine served up by myriad street side food stalls. Fish sauce is a biggie here, a smell of concentrated Ocean City gone very rank.
