cially because it reminds me of. the somewhat desolate landscape of the Everglades in Florida where I grew up. But her colors! While not as profuse as Gauguin’s, they are as imaginative and provocative. At the lower center she has a marvelous yellow reflection from the pond that echoes the yellow sky. This picture does not suggest any particular emotion, but is an emotional response to a scene.
One of the chefs d’oeuvre of the show is Chris Stephens’ “Behind Main Street,” oil on FGR plaster and wood. It is a large, three-dimensional construction of nondescript structures in a town — perhaps Front Royal. Stephens makes the higgledy-piggledy situation, with the end of a simple church the largest and most definite feature of the scene, a great example of how subdued colors and abstract forms can please the eye. His use of light is remarkably effective. At least half the work is blue sky with orange-tinged clouds, assuring us that this is indeed a place.
