of those villages and towns in the county. It was surveyed in July of 1749 by George Washington — hence its name. The village had a population of about 250 when it was established in December of 1796 by the General Assembly as a town. The town was incorporated in 1894 as a municipality.
In 1835 the town contained: the newly erected county buildings, one academy, 55 private residences, four mercantile stores, two taverns, one house of worship (for all denominations), four blacksmiths, four carpenters, two saddlers, one hatter, one tanner, two wagon makers, three tailors, four shoemakers, one cabinet maker, one silversmith, three milliners, one plasterer and bricklayer, two large manufacturing flour mills, a female seminary, four attorneys, two physicians and a population of 350.
Thom’s Tavern was “the” place in to be in 1845. It is now Avon Hall, the home of William Carrigan who graciously loans the site every year for the town’s July 4 festival. The tavern was on the site of what is now the Rappahannock Medical Clinic and was later moved to its present location.
