Laurie Marshall, John Kiser, Beth Hilscher and Dave Gillis. Students talked about what they liked at RCHS and ways that the school could improve. When asked how many planned to attend college less than half of the students raised their hands. Work on programs to help train those students not college-bound for careers was suggested. Positive points mentioned were the small environment, closer relationships among students and teachers than in larger schools and good teachers. Students suggested healthier lunches, air conditioning, more attractive decorating and more help and encouragement in applying for college.
Alumnus Andy Nichols organized a ropes course requiring trust, cooperation and teamwork in problem solving. One of the activities was an imaginary lava pit where students had to devise a way to get all the members across using only logs individually too short to reach firm ground. They also had to lead two blindfolded teachers across, which was no easy feat on wobbly logs. They succeeded in not only crossing the “pit,” but earning their teach. ers’ trust and gratitude.
