The village began a decline in 1911 with the closing of the Smoot Tannery but got a boost in 1918 from the opening of the Rappahannock Evaporating Plant, road improvements in the 1920s and ‘30s and then the opening of Skyline Drive.
Currently, the Gateway Committee is working to preserve Sperryville’s history and plan for its future — which ties in well with the plans for the county-wide festival in Woodville.
