Last Thursday afternoon — on a day that ice closed schools, broke power lines, and filled emergency rooms with usuries due to slipping — 69-year-old Peter White decided to take a walk with his four dogs.
As he does almost every day, he stepped out of his home off Route 600 in Sperryville at 3c30 p.m. and headed along a familiar path leading to Shenandoah National Park.
At first the walk was easy. The ice on slopes exposed to the south had melted.
But when White crossed a ridge in Jenkins Hollow, the situation changed dramatically.
The ice was so bad, he had trouble staying on his feet.
