Settle said he fell at least 15 times during his six hours of combing the woods alongside many other searchers.

“It was a circus for a while,” said Settle.

George Swett of Appalachian Search and Rescue set up a command center at the White’s house, coordinating the search by about 35 neighbors, family members, law-enforcement personnel, and rescue squad members.

Dog teams were on their way when White was found at about 1:30 a.m., two miles from his house.
