Last Thursday, at around 6 p.m., I

decided to spend the night in Shenandoah National Park. At the time I was two-thirds of the way inside Jenkins Hollow and, under most circumstances, a half-hour’s hike out to Route 600 near my house. However, the footing had become a bit dicey and the visibility poor, so it seemed best to stay put until morning. As it turned out, although the company was good (two companionable canines), the entertainment was limited to forest night noises, and the accommodations skimpy. Moreover, there was no way I could notify my wife Margy of my change in plans or the reasons for it.
