In marked contrast to previous emotionally charged Washington Town Council meetings, this month’s meeting was tame, possibly a result of the dinner given by Mayor Stew Willis and his wife, Evelyn, before the meeting.
One item on the agenda was a new service that will be available to county residents. Council member Charles Tompkins announced that the Department of Motor Vehicles’ new mobile unit would visit the town on the first Wednesday of each month.
This is a new program started by the DMV, he said, and will provide most of the services offered at permanent locations such as renewal of licenses and tags. The unit will be parked in the Trinity Church parking lot from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on March 3 and on the first Wednesday of each month after that. He added that they chose the spot for visibility and will probably park at the fire hall after three months.
“All day in the church lot?” asked council member Rinehardt Lynch, co-owner of The Inn, which faces the parking lot. Lynch expressed concern that it could set a precedent for profit- making operations and asked whether a permit was or could be required.
“I would think it would be up to the town residents,” member Alice Butler replied.
Town Attorney John Bennett said the DMV would not be affected even if the town required a permit. The commonwealth is not subject to local zoning or ordinances, but they would be responsive to town requests, he said.
“I think you get worried about too much,” Tompkins said after discussion continued for a number of minutes. “You’re making a mountain out of a mole hill. Nobody voiced an objection for the past three months.”
