Two of the dogs opted to return home on their own. But White found he couldn’t.

He kept falling and he lost his walking stick. Time slipped by, and it began to get dark.

With no moon for light and glasses fogged up, White became disoriented: Over which ridge was home?

He chose a wrong direction. By 6 p.m., he knew he was lost.

“I have never been lost before,” White said later, reflecting on his rescue more than 10 hours after he began his hike.

“I picked a doozy of a night to do it.”

Gary Settle of the state police was one of the first searchers to arrive after White’s wife, Margy, called 911 around 7:30 p.m.
