By John Toler Rappahannock News Staff Writer Philanthropist Paul Mellon, a long-time Fauquier County resident and renowned sportsman, died Feb. 1 at Oak Spring, his home near Upperville. He was 91. Paul Mellon is remembered by many for the wide range of activities he was involved in over a long and productive life: conservator of Fauquier’s rural heritage; collector and patron of the arts; heir to a large fortune, and a breeder of fine race horses. A private service will be held in Upperville and a memorial service held at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., at a later date. Paul Mellon was the son of Andrew W. Mellon, a financial genius and industrialist and former U. S. Secretary of State who built the family fortune in the early years of this century. Paul spent the early years of his life in the Pittsburgh area, and in 1919 entered the Choate School, in Wallingford, Conn.
