He continued his education at Yale University, graduating in 1929, and from there went to Clare College, Cambridge, from which he received an honours B.A. in 1931.
He served on the board of the Mellon National Bank in Pittsburgh and other family corporations after college, but his interests were elsewhere.
His mother had a country home near Upperville, and in 1931, with an initial purchase of 400 acres, he began building the farm that would be his home for many years.
In 1935, he married Mary Conover Brown.
His wife died in 1946. He later married his second wife, Rachel Lambert “Bunny” Lloyd, with whom he shared his passion for art.
In addition to his love of the land and horses, Mr. Mellon was a true patron of the arts. He followed in the footsteps of his father, who founded the National Gallery of Art in 1937.
Paul Mellon is survived tfy his wife of 50 years, “Bunny” Mellon; his daughter, Catherine Conover and son Timothy Mellon, from his first marriage; and three grandchildren, John W. Warned, Virginia S. Warner and Mary W. Greenway.
