Board member Mike Massie said a telecommunications company had approached him about building a tower on his land.
He said he listened to them, and then questioned the environmental impact of steep mountain roads.
If no landowners accepted the companies’ offers, he said, the issue would be resolved.
“The joker in the deck is the VDOT right-of-way,’’ said Luke. The companies may also be able to locate towers on utility line right-of-ways without the county having much control, he added.
Joy Sloane, president of Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection, suggested that before any towers were built, a bond should be posted for removing them when they become obsolete.
“The citizens didn’t want the towers, but they wanted the service,” McCarthy said.
School Choice
In another matter, board member Ron Frazier asked the other members to support the Virginia Children’s Educational Act that proposed s ate income tax credit for educational expenses.
With only three people in the audience, the board discussed the merits of the measure and voted 4-to-l to endorse it, with Roger Welch voting “nay.”
Under the board’s rules, since the item was added to the agenda, it failed for lack of a unanimous vote.
