Patorni explained that if the solar system were placed on a 'scale such that the sun were the size of a soccer ball the nearest star would still end up near Berlin, Germany, some 4,000 miles away.
Weinberg was also shocked to discover that the two planets, Earth and Mars, will line up again in roughly two years, although they will not be as close to one another at that time.
Patorni explained that these varying distances are due to the fact that the orbits on which the planets travel are not perfect circles. In reality their paths are much more oval shaped and so depending on where they line up there are variations in their distance from one another.
