The census also showed that Rappahannock had some 3,385 persons between the ages of 20 and 54, equally split between men and women.
The aging of the community not only results in a drain of young volunteers but it makes the supplying of emergency medical services vastly more acute. The census reported that almost one in four persons over 65, for example, live alone and would need care or transport in an emergency.
Richie Burke, the Emergency 911 Coordinator said “there’s no question when you have a geriatric population, there’s a growth in emergency calls. The EMS (emergency medical services) calls go up sharply.”
Burke is conducting a survey of 911 emergency calls for the last six months of 2003 and it will be reported to the Board of Supervisors in the February meeting, but he said that the number of calls is increasing.
