Most dying individuals welcome the chance to say goodbye to family and friends for the last time. Any awkwardness that visitors might feel is greatly outweighed by the benefit. With this in mind, allow yourself to sit at eye level, do not be afraid to touch, and take your conversation cues from the dying person. Silence is fine, because the mere presence of a caring visitor is sometimes all that is needed. At the same time, do not contradict the patient who says that he or she is dying. Accept any emotion that may accompany the statement by empathizing and listening. Allow for talk about unfinished business, and never pass up an opportunity to express love or say goodbye.
