“Conceivably uranium mining would affect us as well,” said County Administrator John McCarthy.
McCarthy said there are no known deposit sites in Rappahannock County, but that may not mean that the county would dodge possible exploration.
“There are known deposits of uranium in Warren, Fauquier and Madison counties,” McCarthy said. “I think it reasonable to conclude the only reason there aren’t any known deposits in Rappahannock is because nobody bothered to look.”
McCarthy said he had received calls from a number of county residents urging the board to oppose the bill.
High mileage tax
breaks considered
The board heard about tentative plans to offer tax breaks to residents with high-mileage vehicles.
“We’ve had a lot of people requesting high mileage adjustment,” said County Commissioner of the Revenue Beverly Atkins.
The tax breaks would help out the many commuters in Rappahannock who log high miles on their vehicles.
They would not go into effect this year, but the revenue office plans to mail out information about them with personal property tax forms.
