An elderly man was the victim of a distraction scam last Thursday in which he was lured from his Flint Hill house by one man while his accomplices entered the house, ransacked it, and took a safe containing a significant amount of money, according to Sheriff Connie Smith.
The victim - whose name was not released - was approached by a man saying tl^at his company was doing clearing or excavation work near the man’s house and asked if he would liked to come and inspect it on the premise that he might like to have similar work done on his property.
As he wras led to an area away from his house, the victim told investigators that the man spoke into a walkie-talkie in a foreign language.
Most likely, said Smith, this was the cue for his accomplices to enter the house.
“This type of thing is going on all the time,” said Smith and that it has been happening in surrounding counties also.
Lt. Roger Jenkins and Lt. J.C. Welch are investigating the theft. Anyone with information please call the Sheriff’s office at 675-5300.
Student crimes
The sheriff confirmed ar recent spate of student crimes ranging from drug offenses, to vandalism, to breaking and entering and fights.
Last Wednesday there were two fights at Rappahannock County High School, one involving two males in which one was hurt seriously.
