Saving money in your 20s — a time of low-end salaries — competes with dating, marrying, traveling, buying gadgets and cars and homes, and thinking you will live forever.

To establish a savings habit early in one’s career requires maturity, self-discipline, delayed gratification and financial literacy — knowledge of money and wealth gained long before young people start to work.

As a volunteer instructor for Junior Achievement, I recently discussed money and financial planning with high school seniors. These busy students take college-level AP classes, study hard, hold part-time jobs, participate in school activities and dream big.
