and roll heart, however, and she ended up at the Southern Girls Rock ‘N’ Roll Camp w here she met Kelley Darlin. Kelley, 25, had founded the camp when she was a student at Middle Tennessee State University.
Kelley grew up in South Carolina where, she said, the music kids listened to, “pretty much stunk,” and that there were hardly any female musicians.
She’d heard about a music camp in Portland, Oregon, and with the urging of a “feminist organization” on campus, she started Southern Girls.
Nikki Darlin, 24, is the sultry soul of the band. By herself, she could be a whole new genre: Gothic country. She’s actually lived that wandering life so many country songs have been written about. After leaving Rappahannock at 18, she moved from place to place for awhile, but eventually she also found her way to the Southern Girls Camp in Murfreesboro.
They way they tell it, they shared a love of 60s folk, country and early rock, and liked to hang out and play on Kelley’s porch. But they still love the guitar thrashing, bass drum rhythm of rock. Easy enough, they thought, we’ll do both at the same time.
Their first gig as a band was at a friend’s party. Then they played another, and eventually got a gig at a dive bar in Nashville. On July 23, they will release their first full length CD on their own label - they are not shrinking violets, and they pretty much do it the way they want to.
