them. The concepts of “pay yourself first” — save some of your paycheck before paying bills — and make money work for you generated much discussion. You might think a lesson in such fundamental principles could bore kids familiar with them. Nobody seemed bored.
Junior Achievement is an admirable organization doing its best to teach economics, financial literacy and work readiness to kids in kindergarten through 12th grade. But JA reaches just a fraction of all students in only a handful of classes. To affect lifelong behavior, financial education must start early and be an ongoing effort.
