It is often said that women dread birthdays. However, one study shows that women tend to anticipate the occasion with sufficient eagerness to sustain them through fatal illness. This suggestion comes from researchers who reviewed the death certificates of nearly three million Californians who died of natural causes during a two-decade period. While the research showed that more deaths occurred around birthdays, a closer look revealed that deaths among men peaked in the week before a birthday. Deaths among women actually declined before a birthday and peaked in the week afterward. It is speculated that men may tend to view upcoming birthdays more as deadlines while women see them as symbolically meaningful occasions that call for celebration.
