Winning the Virginia lottery is a complete reversal of fortune for Joe Claffy of Flint Hill who along with his wife, Sue, won the Mega Millions jackpot.

The Claffys were presented a check for $19 million last Thursday by Lottery Executive Director Paula Otto at Martin’s Food Market in Front Royal where Mr. Claffy had purchased the winning ticket for the May 15 drawing.

Several years ago, Claffy was involved in a fatal accident on Resettlement Road that killed the driver of another vehicle. Claffy's Ford F-250 hit a Toyoto pickup head on while he was allegedly driving drunk. Claffy spent time in jail for DUI and involuntary manslaughter.

Claffy, who is 72, had bought six tickets using the “Easy Pick” — a computer randomly selects the numbers.
