Barbara Lohre is ready with the curry comb. The new grooming and bathing tables have been installed. The place is clean as a whistle. It’s a new home-based business in Amissville - a full-service grooming salon called Southpaw Pet Salon.
“Any dogs,” says owner Lohre are welcome, “big ones, little ones,” and any dog in between, of course. Every dog gets a bath. “Otherwise,” says Lohre, “the grooming won’t be the very best.”
Lohre loves to work with animals. She has an associate degree in animal science and has been a stable manager in the region for many years.
In 2007, she says, she decided to make the switch from working with horses to working with dogs. After working as a veterinary assistant she decided to become a professional dog groomer and moved to Newnan, Ga., for six months to attend Graywood Academy of Pet Styling.
She also received certification from the International Society of Canine Cosmetologists.
“People want their dogs to look nice and smell nice,” she says. The dog is more comfortable, and healthier when it is properly groomed every four to eight weeks, according to this eager, pleasant businesswoman.
Besides, as Lohre points out, “when you are grooming a dog you find stuff, lumps and bumps and you can say ‘hey and the owner or the vet can keep an eye on it.”
For price quotes, Lohre asks prospective customers to give her a call. Fees depend on the size of the dog and condition of the dog’s coat.
“You will always know how much your dog’s grooming will cost before you leave your dog ” she says on her Web site wwvw.southpawpetsalon.com.
The salon is a short puppy-hop off Route 211, a few hundred feet dowm Indian Run Road, past Lombardy Restaurant.
That’s the place to keep your dog smelling nice. As Lohre says, “people love their dog when it is clean and fluffy.”
Hours are Tuesday through Saturday by appointment only. The telephone number is 540-937-6331.
