James Nilan commissioned as 2nd

Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps

Graduating Virginia Tech senior James Nilan of Flint Hill recently was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Long-time friend and Flint Hill resident Lt. Col. Mark Dick, U.S. Army, administered the oath.

Lt. Nilan, a graduate of Wakefield Country Day School in Flint Hill, is the son of Tom and Kathy Nilan.

Lt. Nilan graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in Political Science, with minors in Leadership and History. During his tenure in Tech's Corps of Cadets he distinguished himself by being placed on the Commandant’s List and the Dean's List, being awarded a U.S. Marine Corps scholarship, graduating from Officer’s Candidate School, and serving as a resident advisor and Tech’s Corps Executive Officer.

Lt. Nilan will serve as a staff assistant to Tech’s ROTC leadership during the summer before entering TBS (“The Basic School”) at Quantico.

His mother is WCDS’ retired kindergarten teacher and current chair of WCDS" Board of Directors.
