According to the Virginia Lottery, Claffy was at the checkout counter when the clerk asked, “Would you like to play Mega Millions?”

That turned out to be the $19 million question.

The winning numbers were: 7-12-24-36-48: the Mega Ball number 27.

There was one other winning ticket purchased for a 50/50 share of the $38 million jackpot. The other winning ticket was bought in Irvine, Calif.

The Rappahannock News spoke to Mr. Claffy briefly on Tuesday. Claffy said he was not yet ready to make any comment, but would make an announcement next week as to what he and his wife plan to do with the winnings.

Both Claffy and his wife are retired - Joe from construction and Sue from law enforcement, said Virginia Lottery.
