There’s an excited, bustling atmosphere that borders on controlled chaos that is the first day of school.
Children, many unfamiliar with one another, sit at desks, or wait in lines as teachers try to move everyone in an orderly fashion - not such an easy task.
Monday’s start of the 2009-10 school year was no different, but for many children - those in pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and first grade — this was their very first experience, and they will remember it for the rest of their lives.
For others, this school year will mark the end of long careers. School Superintendent Dr. Bob Chappell will retire at the end of the school year and Roger Flinchum, who is in his 41st year as a teacher at Rappahannock County High School, will be leaving as well.
This year’s first day enrollment was 917 versus 905 last year. The largest jump was in the number of kindergartners: There were 60
