The word “rebuild" is not to be used in the presence of the Rappahannock County High School varsity volleyball team.
“Natalie likes to tell us that we are not rebuilding," Panthers head coach Jackie Settle said. “We are reloading."
The “Natalie" is Natalie Tupper, and as the lone senior on the Rappahannock team, she has seen plenty of great talent graduate over the past few seasons. But the losses cannot overweigh the potential that the 2009 Panthers have.
Rappahannock County has long been one of the top volleyball programs in the Group A ranks. It went to back-to-back state tournaments two of the past three years. Three former players, Kim Hutcheson, Elena Kritter and Megan Wheatley, have or are currently playing at the NCAA Division III level
Yes, this season, the Panthers will need to overcome an outstanding program in Strasburg and a good upand-coming team in Madison County.
Yes, having little or no height along the front line could be difficult for Rappahannock County against taller teams.
But Settle, who is in her first year as varsity coach, does not seem overly concerned
“Height is a problem,” she said, “but we have some nice hitters. They are strong. They are smart."
And they have 10 preseason games against non-conference opponents to develop before the Bull Run District
