For seven weeks this summer, between his freshman and sophomore years at Randolph Macon Academy in Front Royal, 15-year-old Sean Michael Knick got to pursue his love of the outdoors as a paid intern with Shenandoah National Park’s Youth Conservation Corps (YCC).
“Mountains are in my blood, it’s what I grew up with and I know I’m going to stick with," said Knick, whose family home in Harris Hollow is only about 100 yards from the park border. His parents are Sean and Debra Knick.
“When I was little, I’d be in the woods, maybe building forts,” the teenager said. “Now I’m up walking deer trails. I would check out the different plants, where they’d grow best, and picture myself as a park ranger or biologist.”
