“I’ve had so many good teachers locally,” Harris says, “John Eaton and Lester Carr . . . but my biggest influence was probably Monday nights, hanging out at the One Step Down (a cramped, dark and peerless club popular among jazz performers and purists in D.C. a quarter-century ago), for, you know, 15 years or more, listening to Reuben Brown, and also Shirley Horn. Those were two huge influences on me.
