EXPECTANCY A recent survey of teenagers in grades 7-J 2 pan ides a disturbing insight into how some view their place in the world Over the course of the five-year survey of more than 20.000 American teens. 10 9 percent believed that they "had only about a 50/50 shot of celebrating their thirty-fifth birthday" As a result, those sharing this view were more likely to make potentially lifethreatemng choices than those who believed that they would live longer While this fatalistic view was expressed bv a minority of the teens surveyed, it is unsettling to think that even one child finds life so hopeless. This feeling should spur discussion that will, it is hoped, lead to greater understanding and more positive attitudes.
