Those stories, Tole said, include the sacrifices and hardships suffered by all, active soldiers and otherwise, including: local farmers and merchants who saw livestock and livelihoods confiscated by Union troops who occupied the county in the summer of 1862; typhoid and other life-threatening diseases and wounds suffered by those Union troops and. a year later, by the Confederates who passed through on their way to and from battles in Gettysburg and Manassas.
