said, three deal with local African-American history and its complex and often generation-spanning connections to the war; another tells the story of a minor skirmish that took place at Corbin’s Crossing, just south of Amissville.
And the first marker installed - facing the Confederate Monument on the courthouse lawn in Washington - provides an overview, listing (as does the monument) the Rappahannock residents who died in the war. It includes a century-old photo of two of Mosby’s Rangers posing in front of the monument shortly after it was placed.
“I really hope this will become a source of pride for the whole community,” Tole said. “That and the publicity offered by Civil War Trails, and the whole new category of visitors this will bring to the county - hopefully that will benefit us for many years to come.”
