“We’ve owned this farm for 180 years and it’s my turn, and as 1 looked at how I could farm in a way that would keep this farm in our hands and respect the property and this county for what it’s doing, it became clear that this was my way to do that," Miller says, meaning the move toward conservation and buffers, and more natural methods of raising livestock.
“We’re in the midst of becoming financially sustainable,” Miller says. “I’m probably spending too much on labor and doing things constantly to try to improve the farm. I guess the difference is I’m full of enthusiasm and hope, whereas I think a lot of farmers are full of despair.
"Our sales last year were up from the year before, this year we’re up over 20 percent yearto-date . . . That gives me hope that there’s also a possibility for other farms to do the same thing - being grass farms and selling healthy food to the D C. and central Virginia marketplace."
