Since its inception in 1994, nearly 13,000 men and women have been discharged from the military simply for being gay under “Don't Ask, Don’t Tell." Included in that number are at least 59 Arabic and nine Farsi linguists, who were providing critical sendees in our nation’s war against the terrorists. Countless others have been drummed out in witch hunts that have cost US. taxpayers nearly $400 million.
At additional cost to our country, many more have left at the end of their terms because of the painful ethical dilemma this han imposes. “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" requires gay military members to lie as a condition of military service - to their leaders, family members, close friends, doctors, even - one.
