We write in response to
an Oct 29 letter to the editor in which Sean Cordani advocates for “Don’t Ask, Don't Tell," claiming it protects "homosexuals’ while "making those that are not [gay or lesbian] feel comfortable within the service.”
It’s disheartening to hear this type of Jim Crow-reasonmg in 2009. While this form of discrimination may be different. the rationale is exactly the same as that used by opponents of racial integration of the military in the 1940s: that the presence of black military members would make white soldiers feel uncomfortable and that exclusionary policies were therefore needed to protect black service members.
