I he “Shepherds Play recounts the C hristmas story in story, song and dance, beginning with the journey of Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem, their being turned away by the innkeepers, and the birth of the baby Jesus in a stall

The “lusty, trusty (and frisky) shepherd boys” follow the star to the stable to pay homage to the Christ child and to sing and dance with joy.

Although based on the biblical story of Christmas, the play has warmed the hearts of audiences of all denominations ever since it was written and performed by the villagers of the little town of Oberufer in Germany in the 16th century.

In Rappahannock, the play was first produced by Ki Theater and directed by Julie Portman in 1992. Beth Levick was the music director. The cast included Joyce Abell, Mike Mahoney, Carol Lucking, Sean Kilpatrick, Sid Gottlieb and Peter Hornbostel, director of this year’s production
