debt. We know little about high finance, but we do feel that our generation is re sponsible for the huge national debt and would have the obligation of paying off as much as possible to bring the debt within reasonable limits. Mr. Byrd is a perennial advocate of re duction of unessential expenditures. He has Stood almost alone in his fight for the past 30 years. Now listen to the words of another Senator, a new senator, Frank J. Lausche, of Ohio, and we quote: “Under its expanding programs of feder al aid, it (federal government) is obtain ing control over the operation of local and state governments. With control of the purse strings, the federal government con trols the liberties of the citizenry of our country.” Senator Lausche suggested three areas in which spending must be controlled. 1. Stop the federal government from en tering into governmental services which be long historically and logically to local and state governments. 2. Eliminate from the foreign aid pro gram those grants in which there is doubt that the results produced will not be as contemplated. "We are mistakenly attempt ing to buy loyalty and support which seem ingly cannot be done”. 3. Discontinue “pork barrel demands" under which congressmen and senators ex change votes to obtain approval of projects which could not succeed on their own mer its. On the subject of inflation. Senator Lausche said, “The diminishing value of pensions, retirement pay, annuities and savings of the modest citizen, because of inflation, is a blow from which he retreats completely stunned, learning that what he believed to be a nest egg has dwindled con siderably.” Mr. Byrd has a supporter in Senator Lausche. These two practical men know that 2 and 2 still make 4, and it cannot be otherwise. More men in Congress like these two senators will make a difference in the future of this nation.
