S. airlines expect to have 707's, Douglas DC-8's and Con vair 880's flying in 1959. But the big news which will develop even earlier than this is to be made by the British Britannia, which will go -into transatlantic service this year. It is a turbo-p'O aircraft which will carry about 13 passengers and fly 450 miles and hour. This is about halfway between the performance of today’s transatlantic conventional passenger aircraft and the jets of tomorrow. The Britannia is expected to re duce travel time between London and New York to seven or eight hours and will probably offer the best schedules over the Atlantic for a year or more This might also ac! as a catalyst to the American air lines which will first introduce jet Pavel on the transatlanic run.
