N C , will be well remembered in Farmville Herald territory as the son of the honored minister of the same name, who from 1920 until 1947 was pastor of the field of Union. Piedmont, and Sandy Creek Baptist Churches in Amelia County. H:s brother, the Rev. Nathaniel B. Habel, is now pastor ut the Baptist Church at Victoria. This book represents the meeting of two different purposes and in tents About a year ago Dr. Habel delivered in Chapel Hill a series of lectures on the apostles, a series so well received that he was urged to publish the lectures in book form. On the other side of the picture, Charles Creighton of Fort Lauder dale. Fla., and R. C. Boyce of Greensboro. N. C.. who own the only complete set of the celebrated Meissen statues of the apostles by the German sculptor, Handler, want ed an authoritative souvenir booklet to offer for sale where the statues are on permanent display, at Creigh orfs Restaurant in Fort Lauderdale. F’la. Mr. Boyce and Dr. Habel were brought together by a mutual friend. Temple Barnard, who knew the wishes of both, and the happy result is this excellent and informative book. Although the book is compara tively short, it is thorough and scholarly. It contains the informa tion given in the New Testament about the apostles, supplemented by data from credible tradition. Thus it gives as full and as clear a portrait of the apostles, especially the lesser known ones, as one could expect to find. De. Habel has ar ranged an interesting classification the Obscure Four 'Bartholomew, Simon Zelotes, Jude and Mantes the Less-, the Practical Four Philip, Matthew. Andrew and Thomas', and the Big Four James. John. Peter .and Paul'. In addition to these are chapters on Matthias, chosen by lot to succeed Judas whom Dr. Habel regards as only a temporary re placement. and Judas Iscariot. Of great value to the student of the Bible are several general studies of the apostolic band, the importance, names and characteris tics of the apostles; the apostles in art; and the Apostles’ Creed.
