‘‘Tree Farmer” Award
George H. Myers of Huntly, receiv'ed Virginia’s top forestry award when he was certified as a Tree Farmer at a meeting of County Forestry Committees held in Madison Wednesday, May 31.
The presentation made by William E. Cooper, Executive Director of Virginia Forests, Inc., was the concluding feature of a meeting of forestry committeemen from Culpeper, Greene, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock counties, wHo gathered together to discuss and plan a program of action for the coming year.
The Tree Farm program in Virginia is sponsored by Virginia Forsets, Inc., the State Forest Service, the VPI Extension Service, and the Soil Conservation Service. Its purpose is to encourage better forest management through the public recognition of those wbo are doing an outstandingly good forestry job on their own woodlands. Standards of acceptance have been established, and approval by the top men in each agency is mecessary before an award can be made. With the addition of the above mentioned landowner, Virginia now has 47 Tree Farmers, whose forest land aggregates 208,942 acres.
