Secondary Roads
The State Highway Department has initiated'a Statewide survey to determine the long-range cost of 'bringing Virginia’s secondary highway system to standards adequate for present-day farm-tomarket travel.
The department has established these long-range objectives for developing the secondary system:
1. Hard surfacing all roads carrying 50 or more vehicles daily.
2. All weather surfacing on roads carrying 10 to 50 vehicles.
3. Light surfacing on roads carrying less than 10 vehicles.
4. Strengthening all bridges, and culverts to • minimum capacity of 10 tons.
5. Eliminating all open fords.
Engineers emphasized that the; survey is not designed to develop an immediate plan of construction -—its purpose is simply to inventory the needs, to determine the cost and to estimate how quickly the objectives can be reached.
The total cost is expected to run upwards of 1200,000,000.- ——
