In Safety Program
Announcement «u made recently by Col. C. W. Woodson, Jr., Superintendent of State Police and Executive Chairman of the Governor’s Highway Safety Committee, that Virginia, in spite of an increase in traffic fatalities during 1949, won four national awards for her safety program.
Awards listed by Col. Woodson were first place in her group for outstanding performance in trace engineering, given by the Institute of Traffc Engineers; group first place for outstanding performance in traffic-law enforcement given by the International Association of Chiefs of Police; special citation by the. AAA for the excellence of her pedestrian program and honorable mention from the National Safety Council in its, annual traffic safety contest.
Col. Woodson added that, in the Safety Council’s contest, Virginia was tops for the Southern Region ifi public information, accident records, traffic legislation, traffic engineering, enforcement, school safety and motor vehicle inspection. In addition, she was given special commendation for public information, school safety and accident records.
In the light of these honors won in national competition, the Safety Official stated that it is more than apparent that Virginia’s substantial death increase was due to lack of individual co-operation. “Virginia's program,” be said, "has been adjudged sound by competent and impartial judges but this disgraceful killing continues for no other reason thap suicidal carelessness in driving and walklag,
Cities with populations of ftom 5,000 to 10,000 in Virginia which will receive a place on the National Safety Council’s honor roll for no 1949 fatalities were Clifton, Forge, Covington, Hampton, Harrisonburg, Marion, Radford, Salem, South Boston and South Norfolk. Arlington took national first place among her population group in the National Safety Council’s contest and in the Institute of Traffic Engineers’ contest for achievement in traffic engineering.
Col. Woodson reported that the Commonwealth’s awards were accepted by Governor Battle at the 16th Annual Virginia Statewide Safety Conference held in Roanoke June 1, 2, and 3.
