History of Willis Chapel
Willi* Chap], a small Methodist church at the foot* of the mountains on the highway between Front Royal and Flint Bill,: has a history surrounded by memories of the Civil War. Today it is * known at “Willis Memorial.” I This chapel waB built in memory of the Rev. Edward Willis on the place where he volunteered to give up his life, October 14, 1864, for a fellow soldier, one of the famous Mosby Rangers.
The construction of Willis Chapel was brought about by the missionary efforts of the late Joseph Reid, father of Charles Garrison Reid of Washington. Mr. Reid twas a well known cattle dealer of Rappahannock county, and also the chief corner stone and one of the main pillars of financial support in the Flint Hill Methodist "church, in which he served as steward and superintendent of the Sunday School. The home of Mr. Reid was not far from the place .'where the Rev. Willis was hanged. Rev. Willis, a chaplain of the Mosby Rangers was a member of .« leading Rappahannock family, •but his home was near Rapidan Station, Fauquier county.
