Why these bits of childhood reading flash to mind has always been a puzzle. It could be due to a teacher I had back in one of the grades. “Settin’ in” was never a passive' affair with this schoolma’am. She saw to it you were employed. The task was usually memorizing. Retrospection convinces me I must have been apprehended in more than a normal share of mischief—otherwise how could I constantly have these bits of miscellaneous quotations popping up.
Many a season has elapsed since I sat under the stern but benevolenteyed! this teacher^ Long since have I forgot the bit of misbehavior pertinent to the occasion, but still do I recall “London is a vast congeries of isolated municipalities which have coalesced by acretion.” “Recite it; spell each word, give the meaning, and use it in another sentence,” she stated. Yes, ma’am.

Every now and then there arises the old argument about the authenticity of Washington’s claim to “The First Washington.” From this corner the opinion is: It is “The First Washington” until proven otherwise. Circumstantial evidence is in favor of George Washington’s having laid off the town in August 1749, and that stands until someone proves he didn’t.
