Top-Dress Pastures

For Maximum Grazing

Fertilizers pastures properly for maximum grazing.

This means, in part, says W. W. Lewis, associate agronomist at VPI, that if your pastures are good, keep them good by topdressing. If they are poor improve them -with top-dressing.

For ladino clover-grass mixtures (if the balance is 50-50 or 60-40), top-dress in late fall, winter, or very early spring with 500 to 800 pounds to the acre of 0-1414 or 2-12-12 fertilizer. If a soil test shows your soil is low in potash, use 0-10-20 instead.

If grass in the mixture is thinning out, top-dress in winter or very early spring with 500 to 800 pounds per aere of 5-10-10 fertilizer. This should increase the amount of grass. Let grass grow up to 12 to 15 inches tall in spring before grazing or cutting for hay or &lage.
