Two New Hybrids Go

Two MW disease-resistant corn hybirds here been developed at Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station, end will be available in limited supply in Virginia in 1952.
The first developed at the Virginia Station to be recommended, the two hybirds show promise of replacing some of the older varieties.
, The hybirds, result of six years of corn breeding by Dr. Clarence . F. Genter, agronomist at the Station, are VPI 645 and VPI 802
VP1 802 matures a little earlier than U.S. 262 and U.S. 357, both on the basis of silking and on the basis of moisture in the grain at harvest. It is more resistant to stalk rot and leaf blight, and stands better than those older hybirds. In 15 tests to date in Piedmont and Eastern Virginia, where it is being recommended, VPI 802 has outyielded the newer U.S. 578 by almost three bushels per acre. Ears are medium long, with good husk cover. Quality of * grain has* been good to very good in the test plots.
