My seventeen-month-old daughter cries and holds her body very stiff and straight oftentimes when I put her in the play pen or stroller after she has been running and playing. It is often quite embarrassing. How would you advise trying to change this before it becomes a habit? \our daughter is getting to the age where she does not like to be confined to a play pen—at least, for very long. She much prefers to run and play and it is not surprising, therefore, that she should show her dislike for returning to the play pen by holding her body stiff and straight. Such behavior’is more or less to be expected. "iou may be able to lessen the frequency of such behavior if you follow these suggestions: 1. Always give her time to get adjusted to the idea of returning to the stroller or play pen. Instead of picking her up without any notice and putting her in the pen, suggest two or three things for her to do before being put in the pen—for example, running to a tree and back twice. _ 2. Make a sort of game of getting back into the pen or stroller. Use your own ingenuity. For example, with your help see if she can “jump” into the pen. At first, lift her only part way—then finally, with great glee, lift her high m the air and into the pen. The above methods will not always be successful, of course.
