Lespedeza Seed Shortage
Looms For Coming Year
Virginia farmers, along with those throughout the nation, will be faced with shortages of lespedeza seed for planting in the spring of 1352. W. W. Lewis, agronomist at VPI, says reports show the 1961 acreage of lespedeza seed to be tl)e smallest since 1937, and 14 pfer cent below last year.
In Virginia, seed growers are expected to produce only 3,600,000 pounds as compared with 6,120.000 pounds for the 1940-49 average. In the United States, production is expected to be 150,750.000 pounds in 1352, as compared with 192,011,000 for the 1940-49 average.
There has been some interest indicated on the part of farmers in substituting Kobe for Korean lespedeza. Lewis says that Kobe may be seeded successfully, with favorable tonnage and quality, in lower elevations of the state such as Piedmont and Eastern Virginia. Indications are that Kobe can not be successfully produced in higher elevations in Virginia.
