As with every Christmas before this, folks are still teaching children to sing “Flow Gently, Sweet Afton” in place of Martin Luther5* very lovely “Away In A Manger." Now, it can be stated that "Flow Gently, Sweet Afton” is a Very charming, sentimental, English ditty, but just about as appropriate for the words of “Away In A Manger55 as “The Skaters Waltz” would be with some hymn words sung to it.
Now, Bing Crosby may be a fine man, and it’s all too true, as we well know, that he is most generous with his good work such as donating l'berally to children’s playgrounds as he has done in Front Royal. But, as far as can be heard in these quarters, he either ought to learn to sing “Silent Night” according to Gruber's writing of it, or else he should pick other tunes to exercise his vocal talents. A simple 6-8 rhythm is not difficult to master, and Der Bingle cannot hide behind ignorance. It is evident he thought ■he could do better than the man who wrote the tune, so The Bing takes liberty-plus-license with the rhythm. It’s nothing to his credit, and just spoils the lovely Christmas melody for those who enjoy hearing it sung correctly.
